I grew up back in Upstate NY. After bashing bumps for a few years in Vermont during college I moved west 7 days after graduation in December of 2001. I landed in Salt Lake and have been riding Alta and Snowbird ever since.

I spent a couple years living at the Goldminer’s Daughter attending the University of Alta. I learned a ton about skiing while living there. Then I moved a little down canyon to work in the marketing department at Snowbird. After 2 years of less than optimal ski time it is time to get back to my true love: Skiing Hard Every Day.

I am taking this season off from work, so I can be completely focused on my skiing. It is excited to have the time to get out and ski with my friends, to get some great shots with the photographers, and to travel and compete on the IFSA World Freeskiing Tour. I have been waiting for this chance for a long time and I am physically and mentally prepared to make things happen this season. I hope you like my page. See you on the hill….

We conclude our investigation at ten to four in the morning. We interviewed many of the girls working for Elite Modeling and stayed late in order to provide the complete story. It was a tough assignment but we completed it for our readers.

The morning ended with us trying to get one last shot of Woody Harrelson, who arrived at the party at around 3 am. Woody's press agent didn't want us taking any pictures of him. Harrelson was surrounded by ladies, some dancing on the table. Way to go Woody!

What we found was surprising, as the night progressed and the party reached a cresendo none of the Elite Models appeared drunk. We found out from one of the girls we interviewed that Eastman had told his models that if they got drunk they were fired-- they obeyed. No drunk models to report, no stumbling ladies attempting to dance. Everyone we met was very courteous, only a couple of the models were drinking.

We interviewed about 10 models and they only had great things to say about Stacey Eastman and Pulse Management. BriAnn Rachele told us that after she was recruited by Easman, Pulse Management sent her to Paris to learn her new trade from the best in the business. BriAnn just turned 21, but she said she wasn't drinking anything tonight.

Jonny Glines attended the event and he landed a great interview with Olympic gold medalist for snowboarding Shaun White,. Shaun had great things to say about the Utah girls he agreed that there was something special here. "I mean wow!!". White attended the party with Elite model, Dree Hemingway.

Being out of context is a heady thing and since Saturday night when I touched down in Salt Lake City I've been so out of context it has led to self-enlightment. That hit me on Friday night when my party, spearheaded by Miss Dree Hemmingway was cutting its way through the mobs clogging Old Main Street. We were climbing up the steps to this Italian restaraunt when a tall blonde man exclaimed "Oh My God.Look who just strayed in." It was a family friend of Dree's who was in town for the proceedings and so he steered us over to another group who quickly circled Miss Hemmingway, battering her with questions about her Mom and sister and Idaho and Sun Valley. I spoke idly with a few of them..y'know... idle chitter chatter on the level of "So how long are you here for?" ("The weekend." ) and "What do you do?" "I'm not too sure ," I ventured , "Officially I work as an editor . But really, I'm thinking I should be a stripper." One of our combined group, a strong featured woman with the most patrician voice ever looked over with an eyebrow raised. "Its recession proof," I finished . After dinner I found out it was Jodie Foster. I'll respect the privacy of the parties involved and not relate the night's entire bitch wit conversation but let's just say Jodie Foster is real and lives up to expectations.

The Sunday morning light that washes down on the snow fields of a high mountain town is unforgiving of my hangover. I bolted awake at 7.30am feeling like a vampire. But staggering out to the back of the house where we were staying we found an amazing view (Super-blue skies, snow capped mountains, three story townhouses, winding roads, a ski-lift two blocks away and our own jacuzzi) . The night before, we had swung over these same mountains on a quick trip from the airport to Park City by helicopter and the Rockies had been misted over by the layered shadows of the night . Now in the high white daylight you could see that Park City was also ski heaven. So clear, so clean, so pure. I don't know about skiing but long boards are very directional. TI would take up snowboarding just for the jumpsuits and goggles.

Later that Sunday morning, plunging through the throngs again on a search and destroy mission for coffee it hit me that a whole micro-culture was swirling around us and we were not involved. Our involvement was entirely about bringing gothic starkness to a snow wrapped mountain vista. Think isolated figure in big black Rick Owens winter coat with witch hood trudging through knee deep snow in goatskin boots and skintight Nom de Guerre jeans. Though this crowd was not driven by twisted fashion moments . Sundance on first glance is very Fashion Week convention frenzy with snowboards, ski-lifts and cinema. Hundreds of independent films were hunting for a home. The walls thick with layers of flyers and posters ...the promotional get-ups and giveaways and branded lounges (Britta, Asolut, Myspace, Southwest Airways, Ed Hardy,) attested to that. Thousands of actors, directors and writers were courting (or being courted ) by agents and managers and publicists in these little cafes and brassaires all over town. The real rock stars were the acquisition teams from the Hollywood studios . You could tell them by their very good coats with the little fur trim. Like feathered birds fluffing and presenting, the burnished men and women of Hollywood were throwing down their power and privilege in the form of a fabulous coat. Which is why it was funny watching the scatttered paparazzi littered about the street when Dree would go by in her thinspiarational black skinny jeans, swathes of ash gray scarves and black leather jacket under Patrick Ervill black alpaca hoodie. Click. Click. Cliiiiiick? In due time dudes

That the Sundance Film Festival is about FILMS was properly brought home by IMG's head honcho Ivan Bart. I ran into him at the corner of Main and Hessler. He was in town ring mastering the six ring circus that had sprung up around the short "Acting For The Camera" directed by his boyfriend, Justin Nowell and starring Dutch model/actress Mallory June . After that Page six blurb a whole frenzy had sprung up around the film and it was very charming watching Justin's sweet bewilderment about the abrupt Hollywood frenzy. At a hurried brunch (the waitress clearly couldn't wait for next week's return to normalcy) I chattted with Justin, Mallory , Thomas Nowell (the screenwriter) and Grant Greenberg (cinematographer and co-producer). I got a crash course in how the Sundance career game is played out via short films as well a fantastic heads-up from Ivan on a couple of the essential screenings to catch, the favorite being "Hump". More on that later. For instance if it wasn't for Thomas' insider scoop, I would have blown off a 7.00pm Chris Rock dinner. His film, inspired my his daughter's hair drama was a mega-hot ticket . I sat and wept in my wine when the group went off to a 5.30pm "The September Issue" screening about the behind-the-scenes of the making of a US Vogue edition. I had seen a glimpse on fashionolgie.com and wanted to watch Grace Coddington throw withering stare after withering stare at uncouth documentary cameramen but had no ticket. That is what is great about being out of context. A new matrix. New variables. A new chessboard to master. Next time.

But my reason for being in Sundance was the Elite Sunday night bash hosted by La Dree . At the last minute we decided to dress down but accessorize up. She went plaid shirt, gray cape,leather jacket and that ponyskin hoodie but with heels, not boots. Totally Alexander Wang. TI...wore the same [crap] from the morning . At the door of the club is a milling mob. Because it is a private party it has turned into the center of the vortex that is all these damn parties up and down Main Street. The party for ex Guns n Roses' axman, Slash ends? The kids swoop down here. The Vice magazine party winds down? The kids come flocking. How Stacey Eastman kept his poise, charm and mind I don't know but that is one lovely human being given how he sorted out that madness. We make our way downstairs into a motley crew of film indies, snowboard aficiandos (board pro Sean White is in the house), heads like Elijah Woods and Colin Farell, the West Coast Elite kids, the director of Crash, and some local kids straight out of Ralph Lauren central casting . We find a comfy couch by a fireplace with a library as back drop. Odd, mad, New Yorkers start skidding our way. One really beautiful publicist boy pops out a digi-cam with a snap of him with Paris Hilton. "Is she here!" one of the kids asks quivering with excitement. "No, she's down the street but I told her to head over after wards" . Suddenly bluegrass fiddling music comes over the speaker and all these pretty little kids with pristine mountain air skin start to hoe-down to the beat. It is so insane it becomes directional. "Oh My God. I feel like I'm at Beatrice!" remarks Dree. See! You always got to put new experiences in context.

Could South Salt Lake become the next fashion capital?

If it seems unlikely that South Salt Lake, or SoSaLa as it has been coined recently, could become the latest hot spot for fashion and entertainment, it may be time to reconsider. With the likes of East High becoming forever imprinted on the pop culture psyche via the High School Musical (HSM) movies, and the hottest literary phenomenon since Harry Potter, the Twilight series, being penned by a BYU alum, it seems the time is ripe for Utah to splash onto the fashion scene as well.

One man has a big vision for the future of SoSaLa and Utah's place on the world fashion stage. Stacey Eastman, founder and president of Pulse Management, has partnered with Elite Model Management to open a full-fledged talent agency in SoSaLa. Eastman's hip office is the cornerstone of the new Market Street Station shopping and urban living center being developed at 2100 South and Main.

Despite swanky, new digs and the recent attention the entertainment world has given Utah thanks to HSM and American Idol runner-up David Archuleta, the question still remains: Why Utah?

"I have operated in seven different cities for over 21 years in many different markets," Eastman said. "And all of our superbowl rings (Vogue covers) have been procured by Utah talent alone."
For the past two decades Eastman has discovered and represented some of the biggest models in the world, including Utah discovery Hye Rim Park who has walked runways for top designers all over the world and graced the covers of magazines like Vogue.

Pulse, whose mission includes "slamming forth an intense revolution of raw, clean, talent" was established two decades ago by Eastman, a successful fashion photographer. In that time, Eastman has discovered some of the top models in the business, including recent phenom (and Utah native) Ali Stephens. Ali is the latest in a long line of successful models that Eastman and his team have discovered in Utah. Within three days of Pulse discovering her, she was walking the runway in Milan. Another Utah discovery, Hye Rim Park, has not only graced the cover of Vogue, but has been heralded by editors and photographers alike as one of the top ten models in the world.

SoSaLa is in good company. Elite also has modeling agencies in Chicago, Miami and New York.
The success of talent discovered in Utah caught Eastman's attention, and it's not letting go. Over the past ten years, he has been working more and more with Utah models, leading to the opening of the SoSaLa office in June, 2008. This is the first office Elite, one of the world's leading agencies, has opened in a market that is virtually unknown to the fashion world at large.

"This is the first time since 1965 that Elite has entered into a partnership like this, and it's in South Salt Lake. There's something in the water," Eastman jokes. "When Brigham Young said that 'this is the place,' he didn't know how right he was. Elite has launched more industry icons over the past 65 years than anyone else, and we have been able to accomplish this partnership solely because of the people we have been blessed to work with."

Eastman is not shy about crediting the lifestyle and family values of Utahans as contributors to the success of his models. "I haven't been able to put my thumb on it, but in 21 years the only thing I can come up with is that it's got to be the lifestyle. Whether part of the predominant religion or not, religion attracts other religious people, and that is accompanied by a certain lifestyle."

Pulse models are selected not just for physical beauty, but for being well-rounded and having a strong family support system. Eastman has found that although Utah is not immune to the typical pitfalls of being a modern teenager, such as rebellion and drugs, the kids he works with from Utah seem to display behavior that is contrary to what he finds in the rest of the country.

Central Point apartments have attracted young hip professionals, like Justin Erikson pictured above.

"Predominantly, kids are the best here," he said. "It has a lot to do with the parents and the entrepreneurial attitude of the state. People here are industrious. They live up to the slogan of the beehive state. They are healthy, driven, very entrepreneurial-minded, and passionate. If I go to Portland, to get the kids to do anything is like pulling teeth."

Eastman prefers to sign models who are more than just a pretty face, with involvement in school activities, sports, church, and good grades being crucial factors. Since 1992, he says he has found those qualities most often in kids from Utah. The contradiction of Utah's image and that of the fashion industry is not lost on Eastman, but he remains confident that the move to Utah is the right one. And Utah seems to be welcoming Pulse Management with open arms.

"We had so much political support," Eastman said, describing the grand opening street party he held in SoSaLa that was attended by 4,000 people. "This is not what you are used to in the fashion world. If Elite opened a second office in Manhattan, the mayor wouldn't go out of his way to endorse it. We received so much support from the president of the Utah Film Commission, Governor Huntsman, the mayor of South Salt Lake, and the police and fire chiefs. The support has been overwhelming for us."

The welcoming and supportive attitude of the Utah community has even caught the attention of the Elite office in Manhattan, according to Eastman. Attention that Eastman looks forward to keeping. Pulse has a variety of upcoming events planned, including partnerships with the Twilight movie premiere this coming weekend, the Sundance Film Festival, and an upcoming fundraiser for Huntington's disease.

Eastman has a powerful vision for what he calls the "New SoSaLa," and he plans to bring that vision to fruition through creative partnerships with local and worldwide entertainment and fashion leaders. Pulse has partnered with Wasatch Helicopters to offer sightseeing tours, heli-boarding, and heli-skiing, leading to a new helicopter pad across from the Pulse office. In addition, the number one casting director in Utah is putting in an office right next door.

"We're in the process of building a production capital, encompassing all aspects of the entertainment industry," Eastman said. "We're partnering with local clothing designers, the film industry, spas, salons, sound stages. This is what keeps us at the top of the totem pole, and I'm the only one in the world with the relationships to pull it off."

Eastman is committed to making a difference in the entertainment industry, and unbelievably to some, Utah is one of the keys to making that happen. As he said, "When we find a girl we can't always tell when she will make it, but we can tell if. In South Salt Lake, it might take months, a year, or longer, but it will happen. It's only a matter of time. We're changing this town."

Following the meteoric success of now super model and Utah native Ali Stephens, management agencies Elite, Pulse and X-Sport are opening an office at the $500 MM Market Station development in SoSaLa… South Salt Lake, Utah. According to Neal Hamil, Elite’s Director of North America, “I chose Salt Lake City for Elite’s first scouting office because there is something magical about the region …. something undeniable about the region as producing phenomenal beauties.” Elite is partnering with Pulse Management which discovered Stephens in the Salt Lake area.

To celebrate the opening, a casting call for “Utah’s Next Top Model” will be held at 5:00 PM at 2150 South Main Friday May 30th and a street party, kicked off at 7:00 PM by a base-jumper landing from a helicopter at the same address, Saturday May 31st. All events are open to the public. Tickets for the Saturday events are $6.00 at 24tix.com or $12 at the door. There is no charge for Friday evening’s casting call.

Saturday evening highlights will feature the naming of “Utah’s Next Top Model,” a Half-pipe demo with the X-Sport Team including Randy Marino and a block party with headlining Dj Miss Lisa and touring breakbeat talent DiggaBeatz. New York, NY—Elite Model Management (Elite) will open its first United States scouting office in SoSaLa…South Salt Lake City, Utah, on Saturday, May 31, 2008.

The New York-based modeling and talent agency is partnering with Salt Lake City-based Pulse Management, and Pulse founder Stacey Eastman, to facilitate the opening and day-to-day office operations. The Elite Model Management office, located at 2150South Main Street, is the anchor tenant for the city’s half a billion dollar development Market Station “The Center of Everything” real estate project.

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - If downtown is rising, well, so is South Salt Lake. A huge development project, named "Market Station" is underway on 2100 South and Main Street.

Stacey Eastman of Pulse Management has been involved in the industry for over twenty years. Working in Milan, Paris, New York, and Los Angeles, he was baptized by fire into the business. Starting out as a photographer, he learned the facial structure, body, and personality required of successful models. Always seeing new faces, he began placing these models with the top agencies in Europe and America.

The agents’ respect for the quality he consistently produced and his charismatic personality opened a seat for him at booking tables to negotiate contracts. Having conquered the European and American markets, Stacey focused his expertise on opening the Pacific Rim and placing models in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Thailand and South Korea.

After marrying and having four children, he moved to the Western United States. There he reinvented the wheel once again and opened up Pulse Management, one of the most successful scouting and management companies on the West Coast with operations covering Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, and the Midwest beginning summer 2008. Amongst many outstanding accomplishments, Pulse Management is the only independent scouting and management company coveting five covers of Vogue magazine with their Utah talent alone.

Out of Pulse Management’s many recognizable talent, is Matt Davis, from Utah as well, who appeared in “Pearl Harbor” with Ben Affleck, “Blue Crush” with Kate Bosworth, and recently stars in the ABC Prime Time TV series “What About Bryan”.

Another famous face is Hye Rim Park of Salt Lake City, Utah.
